音乐在喝

There is a strong music tradition in College, with a wide range of musical activities on offer each term. From jazz nights to classical recitals, compline in the Chapel to singer-song writer evenings, Downing caters to an array of musical tastes.

College has several venues which are used for concerts and recitals of various kinds, including the Music Room, which provides an elegant venue for small recitals. There is a collection of pianos at Downing, including a Kawai grand in the Music Room, a Steinway grand in the Master's Lodge, a Yamaha grand in the Howard Building and a Reid-Sohn upright in the Chapel. The instruments are also often available for students to use for practice. There are also two upright pianos in the Music Centre practice rooms. The Downing College Music Society

The Downing College Music Society (DCMS) offers a full programme of events, including orchestral concerts, recitals featuring soloists and small ensembles, and jazz evenings in the Butterfield Bar.  DCMS forms an active part of the music scene at Downing: the society organises on average one music event per week during term time.

Further details of forthcoming events can be found on the Downing College Music Society Facebook page or on the Events page.

The Downing Series

A new programme of music, The Downing Series, began in Lent 2019. Established by David Lowe, Director of College and Chapel Music, the Downing Series take place in the many beautiful music spaces of Downing College. The recitals feature outstanding artists in innovative programmes of many musical styles.

For further information, please see The Downing Series.

Chapel Music

The Chapel plays a central role in the musical life of the College. As well as Evensong, and occasional late-evening services of Compline, the Chapel is used for concerts throughout the year. The Chapel Organ was installed in 2014.

Downing has a reputation for producing successful organists and choral directors, and the Chapel Choir traditionally holds a reputation as one of the friendliest choirs in Cambridge.
